Are news outlets intentionally presenting issues as polarising binaries? Does it benefit these supposed sources and arbiters of truth to divide us? In an era of easy access to vast amounts of information – as well as misinformation, disinformation and malinformation – are our algorithms keeping us locked into the same old echo chambers while strawmanning any opposing views? And if so, is this destroying any chance of having productive debates and open dialogues in the future?
We spoke to three young reporters and journalists to understand how they feel about their own roles as well as the roles of supposedly disinterested algorithms in spreading information.
