Volume 214

It’s safe to say we could all do with a bit of ‘financial healing’ at this time of year. If January had a catchphrase it’d be ‘why is there so much month left at the end of the money?’, so quite frankly the last thing anyone wants to think about is banking. However, this new spot from Barclays is far from the humdrum banking ads we’ve seen before. Featuring a quirky family business in the midlands who dedicate their lives to spreading positive energy from their barn. This is the first of a campaign series profiling authentic but not so typical businesses and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

My favourite egg quote is:

“If an egg is broken by an outside force, life ends. If broken by an inside force, life begins. Great things always begin from the inside.”

Poetic right? Makes you feel inspired… until you realise that like the reams of many other motivational quotes, it doesn’t give you any tangible advice. If you’re wondering how many other ‘egg quotes’ I know to have selected a favourite, that’s for another time.

Anyway, the latest egg news is that the World Record Egg is starting to crack. With over 50 million likes on the original post there’s a lot of pressure on whatever is living inside and it’s grabbed the world’s attention.

It’s the kind of exposure and engagement that brands can only dream of, and I’m sure they are queueing up to co-opt the fame. Some marketing directors are probably demanding their own branded eggs are created and slapped on Instagram. But it’s because of the lack of agenda that people have rallied behind it. It’s a light-hearted but insightful dig at the world of celebrity culture and how fragile it can be. Also, it’s funny.

No-one knows who is behind the account yet but we we’re all excited to see who can crack the case. Sorry, I’ll stop now, I’m just egg-cited.

The first lunar phenomenon of the year occurred this week. Monday morning treated us to a rare Super Blood Moon Eclipse, a double whammy celestial event which was pretty amazing for those who were up at 5am to see it. I’m a big fan of all things space related but what I didn’t know until now is that there isn’t just a man who resides on the moon, there’s actually a tiny art museum too! The museum is in fact a ceramic wafer approximately the size of a thumbnail and features six prominent artists from the late 1960s. Andy Warhol being one of them, who claims his doodle is merely his initials artfully arranged. Could this be the most exclusive art in the universe? Read about the who, what, why and when here.

Okay, so this caught my eye this week. Fashion has always flirted with art. But is fashion now becoming more art than ever? Do you want to look like you’re on the catwalk, or the wall of a contemporary gallery? This experimental Spanish label, Chromosome Residence, is posing all the above questions. “The more something is rejected by society, the more I want to shove it down society’s throat” so says creative director, Rafa Bodgar. Take a look and see what you think.

They say there is an app for anything these days. Now you can share your prayers, join others in prayer and follow the Pope’s prayers with this holy app. I wonder how many adolescents have just found a reason to be allowed to keep their phones with them overnight… ”I need it to pray mum, honest.”

The mysterious group behind the anti-Brexit guerrilla campaign, using politician’s own words against them, is going ‘legit’. They’ve smashed their crowd-funding campaign to raise £60k in just a few days and have now announced that they are working with an agency to buy the advertising from now on, rather than ‘temporarily borrowing’ space as they’ve apparently done until now.
